Discover the inspirations and research that shaped Cora’s Claim—from historical details of the Black Hills to the timeless charm of a small-town matchmaker.
Inspiration for the Story:
COVER: The seed for Cora’s Claim came from the model on my cover. She is standing by a creek (maybe one filled with gold), with mountains in the background. Mostly, the inspiration for me came from her face. It says it all. I desperately wanted to wipe that sadness away and replace it with a semblance of joy. Cora is confused and grieving, in a no-man’s land existence, bogged down with shame and guilt.
Have you ever felt on the edge of life that has been washed away? How do you move on from there, or do you ever? Is there a place where grief and happiness can co-exist? All questions that deserved an answer. All questions that come before a happy-ever-after.
CHARACTER: A child character adds a layer of interest and family life. Maddie refuses to accept that drifting is the destiny for her father and herself. That broken family unit begs answers to questions. How do people rebuild after the loss of a mother? What part does spiritual guidance play in hearts seeking a new path? What makes one willing to listen? These questions lead father and daughter to Blazer, South Dakota, to find the answers.
A SOLID FOUNDATION: And add the delightful series matchmaker, Mildred Crenshaw, whose kindness and determination to fill the Wild West with strong families, provides an irresistible and anchor for the storyline.
Three reasons to pick up CORA’S CLAIM. (Available in eBook, Softcover or KU)
1) Researching the Black Hills and Mudslides
To make the setting credible, research into the geography and history of the Black Hills was beneficial. While the novel is a work of fiction, the region’s rugged terrain and real risks—like mudslides and harsh winters—become catalysts in the plot. Accounts of scattered families spread along the creek banks panning for gold, with the boom-and-bust life of prospectors often bringing out greed and desperation in a man with a dream. Small details, such as the way a storm changes the shape of a valley or how a community rallies after a disaster, helps ground the story in a lived-in world.

2) The Matchmaking Tradition
Matchmakers have existed in many forms across cultures and eras. Mildred Crenshaw was created by the group leader of this multi-author project (Westward Home & Hearts Mail-Order Bride series.) This dynamic woman is relentless in building strong couples, families, and communities in the Wild West. She uses a hands-on approach and often checks on her 'matches' while traveling the countryside. She has an unflinching belief in second chances. In Cora’s case, the matchmaker’s suggestion of a marriage of convenience is plausible, a historically resonant solution for a woman trying to secure safety and stability. Writing Mildred’s character into the story, meant balancing her meddlesome tendencies with genuine compassion—making her contributions both amusing and indispensable.
3) Portraying Grief and Faith
One of the trickiest parts of writing Cora’s Claim was portraying grief in a way that felt authentic and respectful. Grief needed to be both messy and patient; it could not be neatly resolved. Faith, too, is presented with subtlety. Scenes of prayer, church gatherings, and private reflection are written in naturally, allowing characters to wrestle with doubt while still being open to hope. The goal is to offer encouragement without simplifying the complexity of healing.
The Joy of creating a Mini-Series within the bigger series umbrella
Cora and Duke’s story is part of a larger tapestry—the Westward Home & Hearts mini-series. Writing within this series allowed me to include the vivacious Mildred Crenshaw and the matchmaking theme. Creating and building my own town with my mail-order-brides, allows readers to revisit the established town of Blazer, making it feel lived-in, while supporting new characters with each book published. All can standalone, but community allows supporting characters from Skylar’s Christmas Star, Gracie’s Gold, Ava’s Admirer, Lillian’s Letters and Charlene’s Christmas Homecoming to add richness and continuity. Fans of my mini-series, will find familiar faces and growth into the very heart of Blazer.
The Writing Process
When I first imagined Cora standing on that scarred hillside after the mudslide, I felt the ache of loss and the strange, stubborn hope that follows. The idea of a quirky matchmaker and a little girl who refuses to drift sparked the entire story. Writing it reminded me why I love these quiet, hopeful tales — they reflect the small, brave choices that remake our lives.
More specifically to Cora’s Claim, behind every scene you will uncover little choices that come together to make the whole—historical details, characteristics, and the belief that love can grow out of life's detours. If you’re curious about the process and place that inspire these stories, I invite you to read them all in order and explore Blazer’s unexpected miracles.
About Cora's Claim
My sixth contribution to this series follows Cora’s journey, ending abruptly with the mudslide in Black Hills and stealing the life she envisioned with her husband. Her dire situation forces her to reckon with a closed heart. Duke, a widower carrying his own grief but with a cautious hope, arrives in Blazer, South Dakota, with his daughter Maddie, whose longing for a steady home makes her braver than her years. When the well-meaning matchmaker Mildred Crenshaw suggests a marriage of convenience, Cora and Duke must trust God’s unexpected detour toward a future neither of them planned.
Filled with tender faith, quiet courage, and the bittersweet work of healing, Cora’s Claim is for readers who love heartwarming historical romance with emotional depth. Between the dangers of prospecting greed, the stubbornness of grief, and the whimsical faith of a little girl, this story explores what it truly takes to open a guarded heart.
Join Cora, Duke, and Maddie as they navigate the rugged North West and discover that sometimes the miracle of love comes from the most unlikely promises.
